Man says he drove from Texas alone, didn't know bag of pot was near center console

CRESTVIEW – A man who had driven alone from Texas told a Crestview Police officer he didn’t a bag of marijuana was sitting between the driver’s seat and the center console.

A police officer went to check on a Chevy Impala sitting at a gas pump at 4051 S. Ferdon Boulevard. The officer found a 26-year-old Houston man sitting in the driver’s seat and nobody else in the car. 

“I asked the defendant if I could see his license,” the officer wrote in the arrest report. “The defendant provided me with his license.

“I asked the defendant if there was anything illegal in the vehicle. The defendant stated ‘No.’

“I asked the defendant if he would allow me to search the vehicle. The defendant stated, ‘Yes, no problem.’ ’’

The officer said he immediately saw a plastic bag filled with a green leafy substance between the driver’s seat cushion and the center console.

The material tested positive for marijuana.

The man said he didn’t know there was marijuana in the car. He said he was traveling from Texas alone.

He was charged with possession of marijuana less than 20 grams. His plea date is Feb. 4.
