FORT WALTON BEACH — A 78-year-old man was cited for driving under the influence and failing to drive in a single lane after his sport utility vehicle hit a tree Wednesday night, according to Fort Walton Beach police.

Coy S. Reed of Crestview was driving a 2006 Toyota SUV when he crashed about 7:30 p.m. on the south side of U.S. Highway 98 at the intersection of Beal Parkway, according to the accident report.
Several witnesses reported that Reed was driving recklessly before the crash, according to police.
Reed smelled strongly of alcohol and told officers he thought he was in Crestview, the report said.
He was taken to Fort Walton Beach Medical Center to be treated for minor injuries. A blood sample also was drawn and sent off to testing, police reported.
The SUV sustained about $6,000 in damage.
