NICEVILLE – A man told Niceville Police he was defrauded of $1,980 in a Craigslist-eBay scam.

On Feb. 24 the man came into the Niceville Police Department to report the incident. He said he found a 2002 Toyota Tacoma pickup for sale on Craigslist and contacted the seller about it. The seller said he had to sell it because he was being sent to Afghanistan in a week. He added he could not talk on the phone so the deal would have to be handled via e-mail and texting.

The seller told the man the purchase would be done through eBay. He told the man to send a moneygram to the eBay agent, who picked it up at a Walmart in Kissimmee.

The man has heard from neither individual since.

A police officer called eBay and learned they don’t deal with Craigslist and the purchase was fraudulent. The eBay representative said they work through PayPal and are direct to dealer.

The case was reported to international law enforcement agencies.
