DeFUNIAK SPRINGS — The driver of last week’s fatal crash along County Road 1087 was identified Monday morning.
Florida Highway Patrol identified 43-year-old Ronald S. Murphy as the driver in the wreck that killed him, according to a news release.
Murphy was previously identified by FHP as a passenger in the accident that occurred Jan. 7 at about 3:35 p.m. at the intersection of County Road 2A.
The DeFuniak Springs resident was driving a 2003 Nissan pickup truck south on CR 1087 when he failed to negotiate a curve and drifted into the west shoulder of the roadway. He overcorrected and drove back on the highway, which caused the truck to rotate.
The truck left the roadway on the east shoulder and became airborne before overturning several times. The truck came to a final rest on its side after hitting a pole barn.
Murphy was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene. His passenger, 43-year-old DeFuniak Springs resident Thomas E. Molinets, was taken to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola with serious injuries.
Neither man was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
The case is still under investigation, the news release states.
