A Fort Walton Beach High School senior was awarded Distinguished Young Woman of Florida earlier this month and will represent the state this summer in the national competition.
Natalie Katherine Lawson was awarded the title Jan. 4 in Winter Garden, Fla. for the national scholarship program that inspires high school girls in their senior year to develop their full, individual potential that culminates in a celebratory showcase of their accomplishments.
Lawson won the Okaloosa County DYW and the State DYW’s talent competition with a steel drum performance of the song “Under the Sea” from the Disney movie, “The Little Mermaid”. The arrangement was written by Natalie and her professional musician father. She chose a Carmen Miranda inspired costume to add to the Caribbean flair of the performance and was a crowd favorite.
Lawson will represent the State of Florida at the National Distinguished Young Women competition in Mobile, Ala., in June.
Lawson is captain of the cheerleading team, is a member of a competitive cheer team, historian of the National Honor Society, a member of the Science National Honor Society, vice president of Student-2-Student, and has choreographed cheer and dance routines.
She is the daughter of Chuck and Mia Lawson of Destin. With her scholarship awards she hopes to major in astronomical biology.
Through the years, the program has provided life-changing experiences for more than 700,000 young women and more than $93 million in cash scholarships at the local, state and national levels.
