NICEVILLE – A man is accused of stealing a cell phone from a woman’s car, then using it to call his grandfather, police say.
The man, 31-year-old Jason Douglas Hendershot, no address listed, allegedly entered a car on Weeden Island Drive and took a woman’s mobile phone, along with the phone charger and $10.
Police were given a list of numbers Hendershot apparently called and learned they were to his grandfather.
A woman told officers she’d gotten a phone from Hendershot, who said he got it by “car hopping.” She turned it into the Valparaiso Police Department.
Hendershot told officers he had placed calls to his grandfather from a phone he borrowed from a friend. But the woman was able to provide officers with serial numbers that matched the device.
Hendershot was charged with burglary and theft. His plea date is Feb. 4.
