Man arrested for storage unit burglaries

FORT WALTON BEACH - A man has been arrested for stealing items from local storage units and stashing them in his own storage units and home, according to the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators searched the home of 38-year-old William Geoffrey Hopkins on Sept. 11 and found evidence of burglaries at the U-Haul facility on Beal Parkway and Personal Storage on Industrial Park Road in Destin, the Sheriff’s Office reported.

Hopkins’ storage units at the U-Haul and Outback Storage Facility in Fort Walton Beach also contained stolen items.

Investigators believe Hopkins used a bolt cutter to cut off padlocks and then replaced the broken locks.

People with storage units at those facilities should check their belongings, the Sheriff's Office urges.

Hopkins was charged with resisting arrest without violence, three counts of grand theft, theft, dealing in stolen property, five counts of burglary of an unoccupied structure unarmed, and two counts of larceny.
