SANTA ROSA BEACH — Walton County officials will host a meeting Monday to discuss possible expansion and renovations at aging Helen McCall Park.
Seeking public comments about the park is required before the county can apply for a $200,000 grant from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, County Commissioner Cindy Meadows said.
Meadows will host the meeting at 5:30 p.m. at the Coastal Branch Library at 437 Greenway Trail in Santa Rosa Beach.
The 20-acre park on Moll Drive features softball, football and soccer fields along with a picnic area and children’s playground.
Meadows said the most immediate needs appear to be replacing the press box, adding bathrooms and paving the parking area.
Consideration also is being given to realigning some of the football fields, Meadows said.
Helen McCall Park is the only recreational facility of its kind in South Walton, However, two weeks after the meeting to discuss renovations there, a second meeting will be held in Santa Rosa Beach to discuss acquiring land for a second sports complex.
“As part of this workshop, there is a call for presentations to the public for any land owners that have parcels that they believe would be appropriate for the location of the proposed complex,” according to a news release from the county.
M.C. Davis of Freeport already has offered to sell land he owns east of County Road 395 and north of U.S. Highway 98.
The sports complex meeting will be at 5 p.m. Sept. 26 at the South Walton Courthouse Annex.
