The federal government has offered some additional help for chronically homeless veterans living in the Fort Walton Beach area.
The area has received 45 additional housing vouchers for eligible veterans from the Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Department of Veterans Affairs.
“We recognized the ongoing need for additional vouchers in the Fort Walton Beach area, and our case managers are excited to assist even more veterans in the area,” said Jerron Barnett, a spokesman for the Gulf Coast Veterans Health Care System, which will help oversee the vouchers.
The health care system has already been working with the Fort Walton Beach Public Housing Authority to provide case management and supportive services for 75 veterans who have received vouchers in Okaloosa and Walton counties.
“The ongoing efforts of the HUD, VA and local housing authorities should underscore the commitment we have made to get every homeless veteran off the street,” Barnett said. “These vouchers and the case management and supportive services provided by our social workers will help dozens of veterans become productive members of society again.”
Veterans who need housing assistance should call the Fort Walton Beach office at 609-2604. More information is available at www.biloxi.va.gov/services/homeless/index.asp.
