Airstream trailer wreck delays I-10 traffic

DORCAS — A 79-year-old man from Orange Park, Fla., was charged with careless driving after causing an accident Sunday afternoon on Interstate 10.

Richard Walter Sirch was driving a 2006 Dodge Ram 2500 truck pulling a 30-foot Airstream trailer when the trailer began to sway near mile marker 61, according to a Florida Highway Patrol press release.

The movement of the trailer caused Sirch to lose control of the truck, which veered right, traveling partially into the outside emergency lane. The trailer hit the guardrail bordering the emergency lane and then rotated clockwise before rolling onto its right side.

The truck and trailer came to a rest across the roadway facing north, according to FHP.

The accident caused traffic to be backed up for several hours. Westbound traffic on I-10 was completely blocked for 30 minutes following the wreck and was restricted to one lane for at least two hours while emergency crews worked to upright the trailer, according to Chief John Polinsky with the Dorcas Volunteer Fire Department.

The truck and trailer sustained around $27,000 in damages, according to the FHP.

No one was injured.
