Heavy rains were beginning to take their toll across Northwest Florida on Monday, particularly in Navarre.

Two to four inches of heavy rain fell on Navarre within a couple hours early Monday evening, causing flash flooding in the low-lying areas, including on U.S. Highway 98 near the Navarre bridge.

By 8:30 p.m., westbound traffic was down to one lane there due to water covering the road, said Joy Tsubooka, spokeswoman for Santa Rosa County.

A waterspout also touched down near Soundside Drive in Gulf Breeze, causing damage to trees and power lines but no structures, she said.

A shed at a home on Valley Street in Navarre caught fire, possibly after it was struck by lightning during the storm. A house on Aurora Street in Navarre had some flooding as well, Tsubooka said.

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning until later Monday night and warned that additional rainfall should be expected.

Some road flooding was also reported on Santa Rosa Boulevard on Okaloosa Island as the storm moved across the area.
