CRESTVIEW – A man was arrested after a witness saw him break a broom handle over his girlfriend, then throw bricks at her and kick her, according to an arrest report.
An Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office report indicates the incident occurred July 9 at a Hare Street residence. Investigating deputies say a witness told them he was in his backyard pool when he saw a woman run into his yard who appeared to be visibly frightened. Her boyfriend, 37-year-old David Brian Kelley of Crestview, followed her screaming profanities and yelling at her.
The witness said Kelley began hitting her with a broom handle, which broke as it struck her, then threw bricks at her and kicked her.
Kelley denied these allegations.
The deputy noted the woman had visible injuries to her left leg and cuts on her thigh and ankle.
As deputies took Kelley into custody and moved him to a vehicle to take him to jail, he allegedly pulled away and tried to get back at the woman.
A records check indicated Kelley was on felony probation for a previous incident. He also had prior convictions for battery.
He was charged with aggravated battery, obstruction without violence, and violating probation.
His plea date is Aug. 13.
