Man says he cut girlfriend because he thought she was trying to poison him with bleach

CRESTVIEW – A man is accused of assaulting his girlfriend with a box-cutter knife because he thought she was trying to poison him, lawmen say.

Crestview Police went to a Southern Court residence to investigate the June 22 incident, according to an arrest report. There, they were told by the alleged victim she arrived home and was immediately attacked by her boyfriend, 21-year-old Joseph Aaron Johns, who cut her hand with a box-cutter. She said he accused her of trying to poison him with bleach.

The woman said she was able to escape Johns and ran to their bedroom, then struggled with him there. She added she didn’t think he meant to cut her.
The woman had a cut at the base of her right thumb on her palm, which was bleeding. She was treated by Okaloosa County EMS and Crestview Fire Department personnel.

Johns told an officer he cut her “because he was scared.” He later refused to say anything without an attorney present.

He’s charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. His plea date is Aug. 13.
