Youth Spotlight: 9-year-old forgoes birthday presents to help others

NICEVILLE — Chloe Masaitis decided to do things a little differently for her 9th birthday this year.

She sent letters to her family and friends asking them to donate money to Children in Crisis instead of sending her gifts.

“I wanted to help children who are in need,” Chloe said.

Her school had donated to the nonprofit group, and Chloe wanted to give as well.

It was a little hard for the fourth- grader at Plew Elementary School to give up the gifts, but Chloe said she will probably do it again next year.

“It makes you happy to know that you’re helping children who don’t have as much as you,” she said.

She presented Children in Crisis with $240.

Many people who received her letter said they were happy to hear she want to help the organization, Chloe said.

Her mother, Juli Masaitis, said she’s very proud. Not many 9 year olds would think of other children besides themselves, she said.

“She’s such a giving child in her nature,” Juli said.
