Train hits unoccupied vehicle at crossing

MOSSY HEAD - No one was injured early Saturday when a disabled car stuck on the CSX railroad tracks at a crossing at U.S. Highway 90 and State Road 285 was hit by a train, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

A 2011 Nissan Altima was traveling north on SR 285 when it got stuck at the crossing just south of U.S. 90 at 5:21 a.m., the FHP reported.

The Nissan’s driver and passengers were able to get out of the vehicle ahead of the oncoming train.

The train’s conductor, Richard E. Buse, 55, of Pensacola, wasn’t notified about the vehicle in time, the FHP reported. The train hit the vehicle and caused $19,000 in damage.

No one was charged.
