Officials discover marijuana plants during training exercise

DEFUNIAK SPRINGS - Officers discovered a marijuana garden Wednesday while conducting a training exercise near Fish or Cut Bait Road, according to the Walton County Sheriff’s Office.

Officers at Walton Correctional Institution discovered the field and notified the Sheriff’s Office, which executed a search warrant for the property and home.

Fifty-seven marijuana plants were discovered on the property of 63-year-old Quinn Ray Barton, a Sheriff’s Office news release said. There also was about 1 pound of dried marijuana along with paraphernalia used to cultivate marijuana.

Barton was charged with cultivating marijuana, possession of more than 20 grams of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Another man found on the property, 52-year-old Derl Richard Land, also was arrested and charged with cultivating marijuana.

Barton and Land were taken to the Walton County Jail.
