DESTIN – A woman who was wanted on a New York warrant and escaped custody of Bay County lawmen congratulated an Okaloosa County Sheriff’s deputy who spotted her at a local fast food restaurant.
On April 12 the 28-year-old woman was caught by U.S. Marshalls and Bay County Sheriff’s deputies after she fled a New York state arrest warrant. She was put into the back of a police cruiser but escaped through the rear window. Lawmen were unable to find her.
On April 15 Okaloosa County Sheriff’s deputies went to the Whataburger in Destin to check out a disturbance between a man and woman. One of the deputies had been involved in the search for the woman and was carrying photographs of her. He recognized her as the fugitive, but she gave deputies a different name. She continued to give them the false name and was taken into custody until she could be positively identified.
Marshalls involved in the Bay County arrest arrived and confirmed the woman was the fugitive. She confessed, then looked at the deputy who’d arrested her and said, “Congratulations!”
Her Okaloosa charge is obstruction without violence. Her court date is May 7.
