FORT WALTON BEACH — The Florida Department of Transportation will begin making permanent repairs to Brooks Bridge on Sunday evening.

Eastbound traffic across the bridge will be restricted to one lane from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. through Friday, according to a news release from the DOT.

Crews will repair the concrete handrail and sidewalk that was damaged March 20 when a barge carrying a crane hit the west side of the bridge.

The bridge was closed for several hours while crews made temporary repairs overnight to allow all four lanes of the bridge to reopen the next day.

After the DOT finishes its work, Okaloosa County’s Water and Sewer Department will begin making permanent repairs to a water line running under the bridge that was ruptured in the accident.

The DOT’s work schedule will depend on the weather.

Motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists should use caution when traveling through the work zone.
