FORT WALTON BEACH - Charcoal that was improperly disposed of after a barbecue started a small fire on the side of a home in the 900 block of Tokalon Court on Wednesday afternoon, according to Ocean City-Wright firefighters.
A passer-by saw the small fire, which ignited in a plastic trash can, and warned the resident, firefighters said.
The fire had been put out by the resident and passer-by by the time Ocean City-Wright and Fort Walton Beach firefighters arrived shortly after 1:50 p.m.
The home sustained about $1,500 in damage.
People should use a closed metal container to dispose of used charcoal, firefighters cautioned.
