FORT WALTON BEACH – Animal shelter workers called lawmen to report a man on the premises with a machete in his back pocket. It wasn’t a machete, but the man was arrested anyway.

On Feb. 23 Fort Walton Beach Police received a call from a worker at the Panhandle Animal Welfare Society on Lovejoy Road about the man. When officers arrived they found a 35-year-old Fort Walton Beach man with a large knife in a sheath attached to his belt. The knife was hidden by his shirt, which was untucked.

He gave officers his name and they took possession of the knife. As they waited for a warrants check to be finished, they asked to search the man. He consented.

They found his wallet and discovered the name he’d given them was false. When they asked why he said he had a warrant out for his arrest. A new warrants check revealed a warrant for parole violation in Colorado.

The man was charged with carrying a concealed weapon, providing a false name while lawfully detained, and being a fugitive from justice.
His court date is March 12.
