DeFUNIAK SPRINGS — A man was hospitalized after a suspicious fire destroyed the house he was in Tuesday afternoon.

A single-story home at 141 Morris Drive caught fire about 12:40 p.m., according to Walton County Fire Rescue Chief Brian Coley.

A man who was in the house at the time was injured and flown to a hospital in Pensacola, Coley said. He was later transferred to Shands Hospital at the University of Florida in Gainesville, he said.

Coley said firefighters from his department, DeFuniak Springs and Argyle had the fire out quickly.

The DeFuniak Springs Police Department and the state Fire Marshal’s Office are investigating the cause of the fire.

An investigator tried to interview the injured man Tuesday, but he was in no condition to speak, Coley said.

“They’ll have to wait until later,” he said.

DeFuniak Springs Police Sgt. Tony Kaiser confirmed Tuesday night that the fire is under investigation.

He said the department planned to issue a news release Wednesday, but he did not have any information to release Tuesday night.
