MARY ESTHER — A man was arrested Tuesday after deputies say he hit another man with a baseball bat during a fight earlier this month, according to the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office.

Darrell Wayne Hopkins, 18, of Mary Esther, got into an argument with Joseph Birr near Birr’s home on Northern Pine Road in Wright on Jan. 11, the Sheriff's Office reported.

Hopkins drove to West Ponderosa Road and returned to Northern Pine with another man, 32-year-old David Griese, and a teenager.

As the teen and Hopkins made their way onto Birr’s property, Birr armed himself with two baseball bats, left his home to confront Hopkins and the others, and was hit from behind, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Birr dropped the baseball bats and Hopkins picked up one of them.

Luke McEwan, a guest at Birr’s home, confronted Hopkins, who hit McEwan in the head with the bat, the Sheriff’s Office reported.

McEwan spent four days at Fort Walton Beach Medical Center for skull fractures and a leg injury, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Hopkins was charged with aggravated battery and was taken to the county jail on $15,000 bond.
