CRESTVIEW — Yoni Leonard Calhoun, one of two men city police were looking for Jan. 2 when they found themselves in a gun battle at a North Savage Street residence, has been arrested in Alabama.
Active warrants were on file for Calhoun, 27, in both Crestview and Opelika, Ala. He turned himself in Sunday to the Gulf Coast Regional Task Force in Union Springs, said task force supervisor Scott Sides.
“We had been pushing him since the incident in Florida,” Sides said.
Crestview officers were serving a search warrant to arrest Calhoun and his brother Rasheik on charges of armed robbery, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and firing into an occupied vehicle when they were fired on, police said.
Two SWAT team members, officers Beau Baier and Shane Kriser, were shot in the legs. Neither sustained life-threatening injuries.
Rasheik Calhoun was killed by police returning fire, according to reports.
Yoni Calhoun was not present when the officers entered the Savage Street home, where police said in a news release he was a resident.
Opelika Police had taken warrants for Yoni Calhoun on two counts of second-degree rape regarding a victim under age 16, said agency Capt. Bruce DeLong.
It is unclear at this time whether Calhoun will face a judge first in Alabama or in Florida. Crestview Police spokesman Andrew Schneider said Okaloosa County will seek extradition from Alabama.
Two others have been charged in Florida in connection with crimes they are alleged to have committed alongside the Calhoun brothers.
Aphrey Benjamen Collis has been charged with two counts of attempted murder of a police officer. He is accused of firing on the SWAT team during the Savage Street shootout.
Michael White has been charged with armed robbery.
