NAVARRE BEACH — A derelict vessel that was partly submerged in Santa Rosa Sound for months has finally been removed from the water.

The boat, registered to Jeremiah Shastid of Navarre, was removed from the water Sunday and has been on the beach since. It appears heavily damaged and is covered in grime and algae.

Shastid still must remove and properly dispose of the vessel by Jan. 16, when he is due back in court for a control date.

“I’m glad to hear there’s some progress being made,” said James Parker, supervisor of the state attorney’s office in Santa Rosa County. “We just want to make sure it’s not presenting an eyesore and not causing any dangerous situations. … It presented not just and eyesore, but it was a danger. Kids were going out there, getting on it and jumping off.”

Shastid entered a pretrial diversion agreement Oct. 3, which gave him three months to legally remove and dispose of the boat or the state would proceed with prosecuting him on one misdemeanor count of owning an abandoned vessel.

If Shastid has not removed the vessel from the beach by Jan. 16, Parker said, the court will address that and set a trial date.
