FORT WALTON BEACH — Ian Kay had a plan for his Eagle Scout project, but it didn’t work out.
Undeterred, he offered up another idea but that didn’t pass the test, either.
Ian wasn’t ready to give up. His third idea, to build sensory play tables for the youngest students at Silver Sands School, finally got approval all around.
Ian, who delivered the two tables to the special needs school on Holmes Boulevard just before the Christmas holiday, said he feels like he landed on the perfect project.
“I thought doing a project for them, they were going to be some of the people who appreciated it the most,” said Ian, a freshman at Choctawhatchee High School.
The tables are high enough to allow children in wheelchairs to use them. They were built with the help of volunteers over three days and were brought to the school the fourth day.
Ian still has a few more steps to go through before he receives the highest ranks in the Boy Scouts, but said it was well worth the early rejections to get to the project he did.
“The kids are going to actually be able to learn using the tables,” he said.
