FORT WALTON BEACH — Aging Brooks Bridge took yet another body blow Saturday when a Toyota Camry sent concrete flying in a collision with the protective barrier at the western end of the structure.

Jakob Trussell of Coral Drive in Fort Walton Beach lost control of his vehicle on wet pavement, hit the barrier, and then slid into two cars stopped at the intersection of U.S. Highway 98 and Perry Avenue, an accident report states.

Trussell was cited for careless driving, the report states, and wet conditions were listed as having played a role.

Investigating officers found no evidence of drug or alcohol use among any of the three people involved in the accident, according to the report.

The police report noted “significant damage” to the bridge — about $10,000 worth.

The sidewalk was cordoned off at the point of the collision, and repairs to the bridge had been completed by 5 p.m. with no obstruction to traffic, Florida Department of Transportation spokeswoman Tanya Branton said Monday.
