FORT WALTON BEACH — If you ever need to find Anthony Sawyer, chances are he’s working behind the scenes at Sharing and Caring of Fort Walton Beach.
He has been a dedicated volunteer at the tiny food pantry since he discovered the Christian faith about five years ago.
“I got saved and that kind of put a whole new perspective on things,” said Sawyer, who is a member of Striving For Perfection Ministries. “It’s about having a servant’s heart.”
He recently stepped down as president, a position he held for four years. But Sawyer, who works as a server on the Solaris yacht, plans to keep volunteering at Sharing and Caring.
In fact, he’s heading a new effort to provide mental health services to the nonprofit’s clients.
“There’s a huge need out there,” he said. “We’ve seen an increase in the number of people who need help with mental health resources.”
Sawyer said he and other Sharing and Caring volunteers are exploring partnerships with Bridgeway Center and other local agencies.
“We’re just trying to do the things as Christians that we’ve been called to do,” he said. “It’s an opportunity to serve.”
