FORT WALTON BEACH — Students reaped the benefits of their labor Tuesday and Wednesday at Wright Elementary School.
After writing up a design plan for gingerbread houses the day before, several classes of third- and fourth-graders brought their models to life.

“I’m just trying to be creative because I like making stuff out of candy,” 9-year-old Nehemiah Morrison said.
Students sat in small groups layering frosting, graham crackers and candy together to build their edible masterpieces. Many made doors from licorice, snow with coconut shavings and Christmas lights along rooflines with gumdrops.
“My plan was to put the gingerbread on and then put on a chimney and then put a gumdrop on top because it would look like St. Nick coming down the chimney,” 10-year-old Amari Washington said as she broke up graham crackers to make house siding.
Across the room Toby Harvell, 9, and Kyle Moore, 10, were nearly finished with their houses and trying to resist sweet temptation.
“I keep on getting frosting on my fingers and I have to fight the urge to lick my fingers,” a grinning Toby said.
“I just want to shove my face in it,” Kyle added.
When the houses were complete, teachers and parents packed them up to be taken home. Teachers also asked the students to think about how their assembly plans worked out for a writing assignment, fourth-grade teacher Amber Catledge said.
