FORT WALTON BEACH — Bob and Mary Hauge believe their work with Habitat for Humanity is not just helping an immediate need but also changing the future.

The couple have worked in every position available at the nonprofit organization during their 14 years of volunteering, and they plan to work for much longer.

“There’s one volunteer who’s over 90,” Bob said.

“We have to beat that,” Mary added.

Bob retired from government contract work and Mary retired from her career as a school nurse in 2000. The couple say they researched organizations to decide where they wanted to give their time, and Habitat for Humanity caught their eye.

The Fort Walton Beach couple have helped build 37 homes during their time with the organization. Bob currently acts as a construction manager and Mary’s role continually changes from serving on the board of directors to Restore volunteer.

They say Habitat for Humanity has become their passion. One story Mary tells is of a woman who took the keys to her home and said she was the first person in her family’s history to be a homeowner.

“We’re not just helping today, we’re changing the future for the next generation,” Mary said. “We’re ending the cycle of poverty.”
