DeFUNIAK SPRINGS — A North Carolina resident died in a car crash on Interstate 10 early Sunday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The person’s identity was not released on Sunday pending notification of next of kin.
Shortly after 3 a.m., the person went to pull out of the emergency lane on westbound I-10 near mile marker 94 east of DeFuniak Springs.
The car pulled out directly in the path of an oncoming semitrailer, the FHP reported.
Francis Warren Roberts II of Vero Beach was unable to stop the semitrailer in time and crashed into the back of the car.
The impact forced both vehicles off the road and into the woods.
The driver of the car died at the scene, according to the FHP.
Roberts, 39, suffered minor injuries and was taken to Healthmark Regional Medical Center in DeFuniak Springs.
His passenger, Edwin Reggie Moreno, 49 of Falls Church, Va., was seriously injured and taken to Bay Medical Center in Panama City.
The cost of damages to the semitrailer was estimated at $35,000.
Alcohol was not a factor in the crash, according to the FHP.
