CRESTVIEW – A homeless man was arrested after he pawned a woman’s chainsaw after helping her to clear a lot, according to a report.
The chainsaw’s owner told Crestview Police she hired 53-year-old Charles Alan May to help her clear a wooded lot on Old Bethel Road and bought the chainsaw specifically for that purpose. Later, she returned to the lot where she had put a storage shed and found the chainsaw missing.
She said she went to the McDonald’s restaurant on James Lee Boulevard, where she knows May to hang out, and confronted him. May allegedly told her he pawned the chainsaw because he needed money.
The chainsaw was valued at $109.
The woman positively identified May, as his left arm is missing below the elbow.
The owner of the pawn shop, who knew May by sight due to his frequent visits, said May pawned the chainsaw and produced a signed transaction form to prove it.
May was charged with dealing in stolen property, petit theft and providing false information to a pawn broker.
His plea date is Oct. 15.
