Man killed in wreck with semitrailer

DeFUNIAK SPRINGS — A 44-year-old from DeFuniak Springs was killed in a wreck with a semitrailer at about noon on Sunday.

Tony Hayes was driving north on U.S. Highway 331 near the intersection with Interstate 10 when the semitrailer pulled out in front of him, according to the DeFuniak Springs Police Department.

Hayes’ Chevrolet Blazer SUV collided with the undercarriage of the truck.

He died at the scene.

Damon Wiggs of South Carolina was driving the truck.

The 39-year-old told investigators that he had pulled off the interstate to get gas, but noticed there were no stations.

He said he slowly began to cross onto the eastbound on-ramp to get back on the highway, according to police. He said he saw Hayes’ vehicle but believed that he was going to stop for him to cross.

Wiggs and the passenger who was asleep in the cab were not injured in the wreck.

Northbound U.S. 331 was shut down until the wreckage could be cleared from the road.

The Florida Highway Patrol and the Medical Examiner’s Office are assisting police officers with the investigation, which is ongoing.

No charges had been filed by Sunday evening.
