UPDATED Sunday 11 a.m.

FORT WALTON BEACH — Eight teenagers were charged with inciting a riot Saturday evening at a juvenile justice detention facility.

Law officers were called to the Gulf Coast Treatment Center on Mar Walt Drive near the Fort Walton Beach Medical Center about 8:30 p.m.

About 30 juveniles were throwing tables and chairs inside the facility. Reports were coming in that the juveniles were assaulting staff members and trying to take away their radios and damaging property, according to the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office.

Staff members reported that at least one teen took a radio and began speaking gang jargon into it, the Sheriff's Office reported.

The officers waited outside for a time until they believed they had enough manpower to enter.

The situation was under control by 9:30 p.m. and eight teenagers were arrested.

No injuries were reported although one juvenile who was not arrested was taken to Fort Walton Beach Medical Center for treatment of an asthma attack, according to the Sheriff's Office.

The facility is contracted by the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice.
