30A reopens to traffic

BLUE MOUNTAIN BEACH — A stretch of Walton County Road 30A was reopened Thursday, a day sooner than initially predicted.

County Commissioner Cindy Meadows announced the 3:30 p.m. opening in a news release.

“We are happy to be able to reopen the damaged section of 30A at Big Redfish Lake to once again allow east/west travel possible for our citizens, businesses and visitors,” Meadows said.

The road collapsed Aug. 17 when culverts running beneath could not handle heavy rain. The culverts connected Big Redfish Lake north and south of 30A.

Although the long-range plan is to build a bridge over the stretch, the county’s Public Work’s Department provided the temporary fix at the urging of prominent South Walton resident Mike Huckabee, the former presidential candidate and past governor of Arkansas.

“I would also like to recognize the great work that was done by our Public Works Department and the District 5 road crew in repairing the roadway and making it safe for travel,” Meadows said in the news release.
