DeFUNIAK SPRINGS — To Chuck Hinson and other members of the Krewe de Yak, downtown is an ideal location for a Mardi Gras parade.

DeFuniak Springs officials agreed Monday

The city’s first Mardi Gras parade is scheduled for 2 p.m. Feb. 8.

“You guys want to bring some excitement into DeFuniak?” krewe member Chuck Hinson said he asked City Council members. “Here’s the way to do it.”

Hinson and other krewe members attended the meeting carrying noisemakers and wearing beads and hats.

Hinson said the Krewe de Yak, named for the phonetic pronunciation of the last syllable in DeFuniak, supports local charities in addition to having a good time.

The New Orleans native said downtown DeFuniak Springs with its historic homes, old streets and round lake make it the perfect place for a festive parade.

Krewe de Yak members have been going to Mardi Gras events in neighboring cities and counties for several years.

“We were the last ones that didn’t have anything,” he said. “It was time for us to step up.”
