Civilian shoots, kills himself inside Eglin AFB building

Some Eglin Air Force Base firefighters were called away from a 9/11 ceremony Wednesday morning to respond to a civilian shooting inside of Building 1.

A civilian employee assigned to the 96th Test Wing shot himself inside the building about 7 a.m. and died of his injuries, according to Lois Walsh, base spokesman.

A witness said people were running away from the man when the shot went off.

No one else was injured, Walsh said.

"No other employees were in a dangerous situation at the time of

the incident," said Andy Bourland, director of Team Eglin public affairs.

First responders were on scene within minutes of the incident.

Base officials are conducting a thorough investigation, according to  Bourland.

The shooting closely followed another apparent suicide discovered early Wednesday morning. A man was found hanging outside of Fort Walton Beach City Hall.
