NICEVILLE — Dennis Teague’s work in the Peace Corps in East Africa showed him the dire circumstances facing much of the rest of world.
When he returned to the United States, he wanted something more to do than just his job.
“I feel like I’ve had a good life,” Teague said. “I’ve been blessed. I want to do things to help other people.”
About six years ago, he began volunteering with the Bargain Box at Niceville United Methodist Church.
The thrift shop supports the church’s outreach. The church supports a number of different organizations and ministries, such as Sharing & Caring of Okaloosa County and missionaries.
“Prices are set up so the people who need assistance can get it,” Teague said.
The 58-year-old from Niceville helps out at the store in any way he can, from stocking donated items to pricing them.
“I’m kind of a hands-on type of guy,” Teague said. “I need to do something.”
He tries to volunteer as often as possible, usually on Saturdays.
Times are tough, Teague said. It’s rewarding to help families or people on a limited budget find cheap items they need. It takes a load off their shoulders.
“That’s just a good feeling,” Teague said.
