The Okaloosa County Extension has recognized six young people as winners in its annual Teach Children to Save contest.

The children’s names were drawn randomly from 122 entries. The winners were Savannah Martin, Taylor Pfeiffer and Mia Petrovich of Crestview; Jameson Gray and Kameron Mathis of Fort Walton Beach and Tyler Kersanac of Destin. They each received $50.

They were honored Tuesday at the Okaloosa County Commission meeting in Fort Walton Beach.

The contest’s 122 participants set a savings goal and made deposits during the summer. They saved a total of $12,737.28, county extension agent Elaine Courtney said.

The purpose of the contest is to encourage families to talk with their children about money and the value of saving, Courtney said.

Since the program began in 2004, more than 2,400 young people have made bank deposits totaling $233,856.

The financial institutions that participated in this year’s contest were Beach Community Bank, CCB Community Bank, Eglin Federal Credit Union, First City Bank, First National Bank of Crestview and Trustmark National Bank.
