Downpour floods area streets (GALLERY)

FORT WALTON BEACH — A heavy afternoon downpour flooded streets in the Fort Walton Beach area. Some of them were covered in several feet of water during the storm.

Anchors Street near Mary Esther Boulevard was closed to traffic after it went underwater about 4:30 p.m., according to the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office.

There was also a lot of water at nearby Sullivan Street and Glory Place, according to Fort Walton Beach police. Officers were concerned that cars would stall out trying to drive through the area.

The Green Acres neighborhood also took on a lot of water. People could be seen wading down the road with water that rose past their knees.

Schneider Drive, Landview Drive Estival Street, Madelons Path and Whispering Oaks Lane were all closed to traffic because of water on the road, said Randy McDaniel, Okaloosa County’s emergency management director.

Streets in the Rural Bend area were also affected.

“The rain has tapered off,” he said about 7 p.m. “When the water drains away the roads will open back up.”
