YOUTH SPOTLIGHT: 'She's got such a big heart'

Local Girl Scout Kairah Johnson has spent her summer making lots of four-legged friends.

The 13-year-old, who attends Woodlawn Beach Middle School, has devoted much of her summer to building a wooden deck in the play area at the Panhandle Welfare Animal Society in Fort Walton Beach.

“There’s a really big drop, so we’re putting in this kind of deck thing that the grassed area didn’t have,” Kairah said. “We’re screwing everything together and putting posts in the ground to make sure it stays there.”

Kairah’s dad, her troop leader and the troop leader’s husband are helping with the project, which will earn Kairah her Silver Award.

The teenager chose Paws because she loves animals and respects their mission.

“They take care of the animals they find on the street,” she said. “They take care of sick dogs. It’s very helpful.”

Kairah, who wants to be a veterinarian when she’s older, has volunteered at local shelters since she rescued her own dog, Champ, about five years ago.

“She absolutely loves animals,” said her mom, Christina Lewis. “She’d probably have a whole farm, if we weren’t military. She’s got such a big heart.”
