The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office is giving the public another tool to help keep up with crime and breaking news with the unveiling of its iPhone application.

The app, which the Sheriff’s Office launched Wednesday, makes crime-related news and resources available with the touch of the app on an iPhone.

“With today’s reliance on smart phones for quick access to information, this is a tremendously cost-effective way to enhance crime prevention efforts and our ability to communicate with the public,” Sheriff Larry Ashley said. “We’re proud of the fact that our app was developed entirely in-house by our IT (information technology) department, which made it a point to ensure the app is user-friendly and that it does not eat up significant space in you phone’s memory.”

Ashley said more features are in the works and that an Android application will come soon.

The app consists of general information about the Sheriff’s Office as well as the agency’s Catch a Crook series with photos, an area to search for people with active warrants and a search of crimes in specific geographical areas.

To download the app, search “Okaloosa Sheriff.”

“From our standpoint, because everyone is virtually addicted to smart phones and using them for all types of communication, we have a one-stop shop,” Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Michele Nicholson said. “This is an easy way to communicate with people and have them communicate with us in one simple, straightforward app that’s free.”
