HOLT — Lanes along Interstate 10 will be shut down for two to four weeks as crews begin work on a $1 million bridge rehabilitation project.
The Florida Department of Transportation announced Monday that the eastbound lane of the County Road 189 overpass in Holt, at mile marker 45, and one westbound lane over the Yellow River bridge will be restricted while crews replace approach slabs on the bridge.
The slabs help create a smoother transition from the roadway to the bridge, according to FDOT spokesman Ian Satter.
“We’re inspecting our bridges continually so when we start to notice chipping … or overdue wear, then we take steps to replace those approaches,” Satter said Monday.
“The lane restrictions are not going to extend very far off the bridge. We just ask that everyone drive the speed limit and be aware of workers present.”
Lane restrictions will be
in effect until construction is complete. Satter said replacing the slabs requires removing the existing cement, pouring the wet cement and allowing that material to dry.
“We have projected two to four weeks because we have to look at the weather,” Satter said. “We give extra build time in case we run into anything unexpected.”
The bridge rehabilitation project is one of many projects in progress through the Department of Transportation. Some areas are due for routine inspections.
Motorists traveling on U.S. Highway 90 east of State Road 85 over the Shoal River will encounter lane closures in the westbound lanes Tuesday.
Traffic on SR 85 over the Shoal River and Shoal River relief bridges will encounter lane closures Wednesday and Thursday, and lane closures will be in effect for westbound traffic on State Road 4 over the Cotton Bridge on Thursday.
All activities are weather dependent and may be delayed or re-scheduled in the event of inclement weather.
Motorists are reminded to travel with care through the work zone and to watch for construction equipment and workers entering and exiting the roadway.
