DESTIN — Nancy Weidenhamer was dressed in her dog costume when she told City Council recently that the Friends of the Destin Dog Park want to move forward with installing lights at the park.
Shortly after the park opened next to City Hall in 2012, she said visitors constantly have asked about adding lights because they prefer to visit in the cool of the evening. The lights would allow people to visit the park when it gets darker earlier.
Right now the park is open from sunrise to sunset.
Destin’s parks and recreation committee already has approved the idea, she said. The light fixtures would mirror what’s in place along Commons Drive.
“They would have soft illumination, not bright at all,” Weidenhamer said.
Friends of the Destin Dog Park are waiting for quotes on the cost.
Council members unanimously approved the idea. The group will return with a conceptual plan and ideas for funding.
Supporters also are planning a run/walk event Nov. 16 to raise money for the park.
