DEFUNIAK SPRINGS —A Santa Rosa Beach man was arrested Thursday after he carjacked two vehicles and cut one victim with a box cutter, according to police.

A woman reported a carjacking in the parking lot of Express Health and Fitness to DeFuniak Springs police at about 10:15 a.m., according to a Police Department news release. A man covered in red clay slashed her arms with a box cutter before taking her gray 2012 Honda Civic, the news release said.

He later was identified as 19-year-old Edwin Donald Campbell, according to police.

Campbell then drove to Hillcrest Way in the Pineshores subdivision near westbound Interstate 10, where he hit a mailbox, broke off a sideview mirror and crashed into some woods.

Police officers and Walton County sheriff's deputies established a perimeter in the area and learned that Campbell may have climbed over a barrier fence and walked onto I-10.

A second carjacking about one mile east of the DeFuniak Springs exit on I-10 was then reported to the Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies followed the stolen white van into Holmes County off State Road 81, where Campbell crashed and was arrested.

He was taken to the Holmes County Jail to await a transfer to the Walton County Jail.

DeFuniak Springs police have charged him with carjacking with a deadly weapon and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

The Sheriff’s Office has charged him with carjacking and aggravated fleeing and eluding.

The first victim was treated and released from Healthmark Medical Center in DeFuniak Springs.
