FORT WALTON BEACH – A police officer had his hands full when the Can Man refused to cooperate and tried to use a shopping cart to prevent his arrest.
On May 14 a Fort Walton Beach Police officer spotted 62-year-old Harold Roberts, aka the “Can Man,” pushing a Winn-Dixie shopping cart on First Street near the intersection of Second Avenue, according to an arrest report. The officer, aware that warrants had been issued for Roberts’ arrest, stopped him and tried to arrest him on the warrants plus a new charge, theft of a shopping cart.
Roberts responded, “I’m not going anywhere with you,” and began to walk away. The officer ordered him to stop and Roberts said, “I’m going over here.” When Roberts continued to walk away, the officer walked toward him. Roberts began to run, still pushing the shopping cart, the officer wrote in the report.
When the officer closed in Roberts allegedly tried to position the cart between himself and the officer then whirled and tried to punch him. The officer got Roberts in a half-Nelson hold. Roberts responded by digging his fingernails into the officer’s hand. The officer finally got him on the ground.
He was charged with assault on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest with violence, resisting arrest without violence, and possession of a shopping cart.
His court date is June 25.
