NICEVILLE — Susie Hagwood learned a long time ago she lived a blessed life and always looked for ways to show her thanks.

Through the years, the military spouse volunteered wherever they lived and never gave it a second thought.

A  decade ago, she started volunteering with Take Stock in Children in Okaloosa County and met a young girl named Sarah Maton.

“Their relationship has just gone beyond any expectation of our program,” said Cindy Frazier, the local program coordinator. “She took the ball and ran with it.”

Susie was supposed to mentor Sarah for a year, but one year came and went and then another and another.

“I never realized that relationship would be what it has been for me,” Sarah said. “Now I’m looking back and I’m like, ‘Gosh, she dedicated a lot of her life to me.’ ”

In addition to meeting with Sarah on a weekly basis all the way through high school, Susie helped her find and apply for scholarships.

When Sarah decided to change her career path and pursue a master’s degree, Susie connected her with people in the field.

Susie said while she appreciates the praise, she was simply living the meaning of her favorite word: care.

“Everybody has something special to offer,” Susie said. “I truly believe that ... but you have to care.”

Also Nominated: The “incredible staff at Walgreens on Mary Esther,” who have made one family’s struggle with cancer easier through their professionalism, kindness and compassion.
