FORT WALTON BEACH — For about 23 years, Almut Flentge-Parker has led the Animal Protection League, an organization that organizes low-cost spaying and neutering for local animals. In that time, the league has helped more than 10,000 pets and strays.

Each month, Flentge-Parker fields about 140 calls from pet owners. She schedules the operation, works out payment, and has even transported pets whose owners don’t drive to the appointment.

“What Ms. Parker does has far-reaching benefits for the people and pets in this community and she deserves to be acknowledged and supported in her efforts,” said her friend Candace Powell.

Establishing cat feeding stations in the area grew from the league’s mission to help diminish pet overpopulation. Cats who visit a station are trapped, spayed, microchipped and vaccinated.

“I believe if I had 50 more years, I could solve the problem,” the 73-year-old said.

Every day, Flentge-Parker wakes up at about 5:30 a.m. to make her rounds at the stations. She drives at least 20 miles a day, just refilling the feeding stations.

“At the end of the day, I can say I have accomplished something worthwhile and I have done something for the community,” Parker said.
