DeFUNIAK SPRINGS - A student at Walton Academy faces charges after a school resource officer discovered the student had brought marijuana to school.

The Walton County sheriff’s deputy began looking for the student after he spotted a backpack left outside the school that “smelled strongly of marijuana,” according to a news release from the Sheriff’s Office.

After searching the backpack and not finding any sign of drugs, school officials identified the owner and asked the student about it, the report stated.

The student said the marijuana was hidden in the bathroom for other students. When officials went there, they found a second student with one of the bags.

The second student was arrested and charged with possession of less than 20 grams of marijuana.

As of Thursday morning, the Sheriff’s Office applied for a warrant to arrest the first student.
