Lane and Brenda Rees resign from county GOP posts

Lane Rees, who was arrested April 1 and charged with possession and transmission of child pornography, has resigned as Walton County’s Republican state committeeman.

His wife, Brenda Rees, also has stepped down as the county’s Republican state committeewoman.

They announced their resignations last week in a phone call to Jim Anders, chairman of the Walton County Republican Executive Committee.

The Reeses also resigned their county precinct committee posts, Anders said.

An election to fill their spots will be held at the May 3 meeting of the county’s Republican Party Executive Committee, Anders said. The meeting will be at 6 p.m. Any executive committee member can run, and the election will be decided by secret ballot.

State officials have told Anders that the positions can be filled by vote of just the 34 members of the executive committee. GOP state committeemen and women typically are chosen by a vote of registered Republicans in the county.

Lane Rees, who runs a business called Human Resources Solutions, was arrested by the Walton County Sheriff’s Office after the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children found child pornography being sent to and from his work computer.

Rees’ plea date is scheduled for May 14.

He served as a county commissioner from 2000 to 2004.
