SANTA ROSA BEACH — Charles Plauche isn’t quite sure what form of divine nudge led him to work at Haven House Mission, but the South Walton man knows he’s right where he needs to be.
Plauche has worked for 18 years as the director of Haven House, a nonprofit organization that provides housing and counseling to men in rehabilitation from drug or alcohol use.
“For me, I could see clearly that if I devoted my life to service I’d have a happy and joyous life,” Plauche said. “Trying to change someone’s life from drug abuse to a clean lifestyle is a struggle, but the success stories make it worth it.”
Each morning, Plauche begins his day with a 7:30 a.m. group meeting discussing anything in the lives of the men staying at Haven House. Once the discussion ends, the men go their separate ways to perform various tasks throughout the property and the Haven House thrift shops.
Throughout the day, Plauche meets up with the men to check on their progress, see how their day is and give an encouraging word.
“Charles plays a huge role in the recovery of these men,” said Robin Colson, who has a family member staying at Haven House.
“He is available when they are angry, sad or simply need a listening ear.”
Plauche has seen “hundreds upon hundreds” of men come out ready to lead a successful and productive life without the use of drugs or alcohol.
“I can’t get anybody to change,” Plauche said. “That’s between them and God; we just provide the vehicle. I consider myself lucky to be a part of someone putting their life back together.”
